Macy Young’s 2024 BFI Breakaway Championship was nothing short of dominant—and according to Young, competing was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Usually a reserved roper, Young delved into what it took to win her second-ever BFI Championship on The Breakdown Podcast. From focusing on “knocking them down” at the BFI astride speedy mount “Boomer” to the string of practice horses that let her rope for herself and 2024 ProRodeo plans, Young covers a lot of ground.

More about Macy Young’s BFI Win

Macy Young dominated the 2024 BFI breakaway roping competition presented by Charlie 1 Horse, surpassing nearly 200 entries with exceptional times of 3.48, 3.45, and 3.7 seconds, earning a total of $17,500.

To say Young outperformed her competitors would be an understatement — the closest roper trailed her by a staggering 2.43 seconds in the average.

“He’s the fastest thing I’ve ever ridden and he’s starting to score a lot more consistently,” Young, 31, said. “It gives me all the confidence in the world that if I miss the barrier, I am still going to catch up.”

Young also finished No. 6 in the average on her second entry to garner another $3,500.

“When we got here today, my husband said, ‘It’s just going to be a catching contest… catch every single one of them,’” Young recounted. “He told me to see hip by the end of the gate and I thought ‘Oh my gosh that’s really far. Those calves RUN.’ But I got into the mindset of pinging them down, and I got to my seventh [high callback] and blew my stirrup. I was so frustrated, and [the win] came down to my last run.”

This episode is supported by Fastback Ropes

Fastback ropes was created in 1995 with a single mission in mind – to build the best rope on the market.

Fastback features two ropes breakaway ropers love. The ‘Edge’ is a four-strand calf rope made of texturized poly. This rope is durable, meaning it stands up in all conditions.

Their other rope is ‘Athena,’ which is made exclusively for breakaway ropers. It’s pink with a purple poly core that gives enhanced tip weight and durability. It’s made for all conditions and delivers a snappy loop and close.
