Caul Cavataio knows what it's like to have the roping fever—and he's putting the affliction to good use at The Patriot Event in Fort Worth.

At only 11 years old, sixth grader Caul Cavataio knows exactly what he wants to do; rope calves and win doing it.

He added another buckle to his collection at the Hooey Jr. Patriot 12 and Under Breakaway Jackpot by roping three head in 7.81 seconds, worth $2,456.

“My first run I scored good and was a 2.67,” the young man from Lindell, Texas, explained. “My second run I just wanted to keep it smooth and was a 3.04. Then, going into the short go I was high call and really going at ‘em and was a 2.1.”

He did it on a horse he calls “Three,” who’s owned by family friend Jill Tanner.

“He scores really good and is easy to rope off of,” Cavataio said. “I can breakaway or tie down off of him. I got to go to Vegas and rope on him, and I won $30,000 on it in Vegas [in December]. Thank you to Jill for letting me ride Three.”

Usually a gunslinger, Cavataio explained it was difficult to rope more strategically in the 12 and Under, where staying clean at the line plays a large part in catching a check. But the strategy worked in his favor, and he’s looking to use his momentum in the 12 and Under Tie-Down roping later in the week.
