The 2019 Cheyenne Frontier Days Breakaway Roping Champion Jordan Jo Fabrizio, who is originally from Colorado but now residing in Texas, stunned the field at The Cowgirl Gathering’s first-ever Open Breakaway Roping in the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas on Nov. 14, 2020.

Fabrizio, 29, came from behind at 10th callback and made the fastest run in the short round in 2.03 seconds to put pressure on the top nine ladies with an average time of 7.19 seconds on three head, worth $3,263.

“It’s been tougher than heck all day long,” Fabrizio said. “These girls have been going at it. I was just glad to get in the short round. I’ve been one out almost all week at the WCRA, so I was just like, ‘Woohoo! Short round!’”

Fabrizio drew a little black calf that ran straight down the pen with its head up waiting for her to make her signature catch that allowed her to move into the lead and win the short round fast time check, adding $1,457 to her earnings.

“I was just trying to make sure that I saw my start and did my job,” said Fabrizio, who works as the assistant rodeo coach at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. “I knew that the lineup in the short round was incredible—there were lots of girls who rope great. I knew that they were going to be coming for me, so I was just trying to set the pace and let them come catch me and it ended up working out.

Fabrizio could not have won this inaugural event without the help of her 10-year-old sorrel mare, Cookie.

“I’ve had her for about over a year now,” said Fabrizio, who also owns Fabrizio Marketing and is the marketing director for Lone Star Ropes. “I got her from Chancey Scheer—used to be Chancey Etbauer. She’s got lots of tools, so I’m just trying to figure out how to ride her and maybe it will all come together.”

Fabrizio, who is getting ready to rope at the Inaugural National Finals of Breakaway Roping in December, strives to be a part of every breakaway roping that she can.

“It’s just a blessing,” she said. “With everyone coming out and having breakaways for us it’s a great opportunity, and we’re thankful. There are a lot of opportunities now, and I hope there’s lots more firsts. It’s a great time to be a breakaway roper, and it’s a fun time to be a part of it.”
