2026 Rookie Resistol contender, Amy Ohrt, has been having a standout yea, sitting third in the Resistol Rookie standings, aboard “Frothy.”
Frothy, registered as Frothy Wild Card, is a 2013 black gelding by Wild Card Dun It out of Utopia Law Man mare Law Mans Blithe. He was, by all means, meant to be a barrel horse but has found his place in the breakaway.
Frothy’s Back Story
In 2014, the Ohrt family was on the hunt for a barrel horse and pulled the trigger on the black yearling colt. Frothy wasn’t exactly the nicest to get along with back then and starting him wasn’t a breeze.
“He wasn’t the easiest to train, I’ll say that,” said Ohrt. “But now, he’s pretty special to all of us.”
Ohrt’s dad, Tommy, broke the gelding and put a handle on him before giving her the reins to go do whatever she wanted to do. After working lots of cattle on him, she did initially start him in the barrels and her older brother, Clint, also roped on him some.
“He’s actually a really nice barrel horse, but he just never grew to be one,” she said. “So, we started roping on him—he’s a nice head horse too.”
Frothy went from being a little hard to train to being an all-around horse—but breakaway is where they saw him shine.
“He excelled into breakaway really well,” said Ohrt.
Who Frothy is Now
Now 13-years-old, Frothy has come into his own as a proven breakaway horse—but that has not dimmed his personality.
“He’s still scared of everything like a two-year-old colt,” Ohrt laughed.
Frothy is a horse that is occasionally described as on the muscle—he is strong and always ready to go. When she is walking to the arena or sitting in a performance, she must be focused because he might get a little spooky.
“Ever since AT&T stadium, at the women’s (Women’s Rodeo World Championship) finals, he’s been scared to death of lights,” she said.
Getting the Call
Frothy’s jumpy behavior doesn’t keep him from being her main man. With just one other horse on her trailer as a backup, Frothy gets the call 9 times out of 10.
“I have a roan horse named Rosa that will hopefully be seeing a couple rodeos coming up,” she said. “But she’ll be going as a backup this year.”
Ohrt credits Frothy’s ability to be great in any set up for her reliance on him.
“He’s really good at anything,” she said. “He can really score good, but I can’t complain on short setups either because when I need him to be short and fast, he steps up to the plate.”

Keeping Him Going
Ohrt has a game plan when it comes to keeping Frothy not only sharp but sound as well in between miles on the rodeo road.
“He is one of those horses that the more you ride him, the better he gets,” Ohrt said.
With that in mind, the 20-year-old Victoria, Texas, cowgirl ropes two or three calves on him every other day. She keeps him rode and in shape to prevent him from acting fresh.
She also has a maintenance plan outside of the arena that involves routine injections and massage therapy.
“I am a certified massage therapist, so I give him massages,” said Ohrt. “I believe in that more than anything because you get to feel how they’re sore and where they’re sore.”
