Breakaway Playoff Series Standings Update: Top Ropers Battle for Puyallup, Sioux Falls Spots

As the WPRA breakaway Playoff Series standings come into focus, the top 23 ropers are vying for a spot in Puyallup.

As the ProRodeo breakaway ropers enter the backstretch of the summer run, all eyes and calculators are turning towards the WPRA’s Tour Standings (more formally known as the Playoff Series) that determine entry into some of the most lucrative rodeos.

What’s at stake?

The top 23 ropers plus an NFR Open representative (usually the Champion but Shelby Boisjoli-Meged is advancing via standings) will get to rope in Puyallup, Washington. In 2024, the most a roper could earn there was a whopping $19,900—a game changing amount of money for the ladies duking it out in the closely-bunched teens and 20’s in the WPRA World Standings.

From Puyallup, the top four advance to the Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls, where they’re joined by the top eight in the Playoff Series standings (spots drop down if filled via Puyallup.)

When it comes to Sioux Falls, the stakes are high. Taking place the last weekend ProRodeo regular season Sept. 26–28, the Champion stands to earn more than $30,000 and change the trajectory of their season heading to the NFBR in Las Vegas.

What is the ProRodeo Playoff Series?

Think of the Playoff Series as a WPRA Circuit without borders, where the prize isn’t money—but points. Select rodeos are designated as part of this series, and the top 20 placings at these rodeos are eligible for points. Puyallup and Sioux Falls are the finale of the Playoff Series.

As of August 4, there are 18 Playoff Series Rodeos left in the season. There’s a catch, though. Books close for Puyallup on Aug. 18, meaning the top 23 will be locked in for that rodeo. But ropers both inside and outside the top 23 will continue hitting Playoff Series rodeos in the meantime to hedge their bets on squeaking into the top eight. In short, there’s going to be a lot more rodeoing happening for the ladies with Las Vegas aspirations.
