Jackie Crawford and Masterpiece Returns Sit High Call in the 4-&-Under Breakaway at Old West 

Texas’ Jackie Crawford and Masterpiece Returns are high call in the 4-&-Under Breakaway going into the ARHFA Old West Futurity Finals in Heber City, Utah, after posting a 229.09 in Round 1 and a 225.79 in Round 2. 

Crawford bought the mare as a 3-year-old from Abby Phillips, with Jade Mitchell helping her find the horse. She then had Kelsey Thomas ride her for a couple of months while Crawford was rodeoing, just to get her started tracking and swinging the rope. 

“Then I’ve taken her and trained her and finished her out,” Crawford said. “She’s done really well at the futurities. She’s got a really pretty presence about her. She does things very cosmetic. She’s a really pretty mare.” 

That presence showed up every time Crawford has pointed her at a futurity. 

“She’s really showed up at every single futurity I’ve taken her to,” Crawford said. “That’s kind of a good attribute.” 

The 2022 palomino mare is by Metallic Masterpiece, a 2011 sorrel stallion by Metallic Cat and out of Kings Masterpiece, by Peppy San Badger. Metallic Masterpiece is an NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Finalist and multiple NRCHA and ranch horse title holder, and his dam Kings Masterpiece is an NRCHA All-Time Leading Producer. Her dam is Royalty Return. Masterpiece Returns was bred by Burnett Ranches and is owned by Crawford. 

Crawford said the mare has been a consistent performer on the futurity circuit, including a first-round win at the Gold Buckle—though the second round did not go as planned. 

“When she’s come to the futurity, she stepped to the plate,” Crawford said. “We won the first round and I figure-eighted a leg on the second one. I’m super proud of her. I like it when a horse wants to step to the plate when it’s game time.” 

For Crawford, the futurity breakaway has become something more than just another competitive outlet: it is the start of a new chapter. 

“This is definitely something that I hope keeps growing,” Crawford said. “I hope that more girls want to play in this arena because it really showcases the training and the horses. I think that we have a huge market in the breakaway for the futurity breakaway horse. And for me, I love it because I’m towards the end of my career and this really gives me a goal to look forward to that’s going to be a lot of fun for me.”
