New Zealand’s inaugural breakaway roping finals took place April 5–6, 2025, on the Southern island in Alexandra at the Rocking V Arena, where ropers competed over six rounds for their share of the winnings and prizes.
In the end, Amelia Knowles and her Appaloosa “Koda” topped the field with a time of 18.4 seconds on five head, winning $1,248.
Knowles was also at the reins of the event production, aiming big for the first year.
“This was our first year with the breakaway finals and we are so proud of the support and results,” Knowles said. “We’re going to be bigger and better plans in 2026 event, so get to practicing and get excited.”
Some New Zealand context: Rodeo isn’t prevalent enough in New Zealand to be a full-time gig for ropers, meaning they often lead other careers.
Most cattle roped in New Zealand are dairy calves—called “bobby calves”—headed for the market.
