Getting into Puyallup is hard, but advancing out of it to Sioux Falls? Even harder.

The breakaway roping battle in Puyallup, WA, kicked off Thursday Sept. 5 with 24 ropers battling for a final four berth—which will send them to the lucrative Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls.

Here’s the draw, format, results and more for the breakaway roping in Puyallup.

What’s at stake in Puyallup?

In short, a lot. The Washington State Fair (Puyallup), is taking place Sept. 5–8, and paying $73,000 in the breakaway roping. The most a roper could earn is $19,900—the equivalent of a really nice week (or two) of winning at one event.

What’s more, is that Puyallup is a potential entry into Sioux Falls, which takes place on the last weekend ProRodeo regular season Sept. 26–28. Read more about Sioux Falls here.

Puyallup breakaway format

There will be two “sets” or “sections,” both comprised of 12 ropers. Each set is two go-rounds, back-to-back. Following the long rounds will be a top eight Semifinals, followed by a top four Finals.

The top four ropers based on the average from each of the two sets will advance to the Semifinals on Sunday, Sept. 8. The top four from the Semifinals will advance to the Finals.

Puyallup payout

Payoff per performance:

  • 1st: $3,450
  • 2nd: $2,587.50
  • 3rd: $1,725
  • 4th: $862.50

In the Semifinals, which will be made up of eight ropers, 5th-8th will receive $1,500. The top four teams will advance to the Finals. Payoff for the Finals is as follows:

  • 1st: $13,000
  • 2nd: $9,750
  • 3rd: $6,500
  • 4th: $3,250
