There are five weeks left in the 2023 ProRodeo season, and ropers inside and outside the Top 15 are battling for an opportunity to compete at the NFBR come December.

While there were more than 20 ProRodoeos with breakaway Aug. 16–20, 2023, the most influential were the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo in Baker, Montana, and the Caldwell Night Rodeo in Caldwell, Idaho, which paid a combined total of $85,429.

The following three breakaway ropers capitalized on these events and beyond, making them the top three earners in late August.

3. Sarah Angelone, $8,713

Sarah Angelone tied 18-time World Champion JJ Hampton for Washington’s Moses Lake Round-Up championship, winning $2,400 (full payouts are not yet available).

At the Caldwell Night Rodeo, Angelone earned $3,848, and she picked up a round win at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo. She is currently No. 3 in the world with $102,539 in earnings, outpacing big sister and 2022 World Champion Martha Angelone—currently No. 4 in the world—by $6,537. This past weekend saw no movement in Angelone’s world standings, which are roughly $23,000 shy of the No. 1 spot, but $51,000 ahead of No. 15.

2. Shayla Hall, $9,717

Shayla Hall of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, dominated the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo, splitting the Round 1 win, winning Round 2 and taking the average championship with a time of 4.3 seconds on two head.

Hall is currently No. 27 in the world with $34,354 in winnings, up from approximately No. 40 thanks to her $9,717 weekend in Baker. To climb into the Top 15, Hall needs at least an additional $17,254.

1. Taylor Engesser, $10,592

Hailing from Spearfish, South Dakota, Taylor Engesser won more than $10,000 over the weekend.

She roped in 2.7 and 3.0 seconds at the Caldwell Night Rodeo to net $5,525. In Baker, Montana, at the Fallon County Fair, she roped in 2.8 and 2.2 seconds to finish No. 4 in the average and round up a total of $5,076 in winnings.

The effort moved her to No. 33 in the world standings with $29,578 in season earnings. To break into the Top 15, Engesser needs to win at least $22,030.

Engesser didn’t pick up any circuit earnings this past weekend, but she’s sitting No. 6 in the Badlands Circuit, primed for a ticket to the Badlands Circuit Finals Oct. 13–15, 2023, in Minot, North Dakota.
