Breakaway ropers continue to enter events in droves, and the Cinch World Championship Junior Rodeo is a prime example—where in 2023 the breakaway roping paid more than any other event in the rodeo.

The wave isn’t slowing down, either, with WCJR producers saying breakaway entries are on track increase and pay even more in 2024.

The highest earning athlete at the 2023 WCJR was Amy Ohrt, who earned a total of $12,586. Ohrt, who just netted $60,000 at the 2024 Women’s Rodeo World Championship, earned $4,447 in the breakaway, $1,616 in the goat tying, $1,523 in the pole bending and $5,000 in All-Around Titles.

WCJR breakaway payouts vs. other girls events

Breakaway paid the most out of all girls events in both Junior (19-13) and Youth (15-10) in 2023. Breakaway’s payout was 34.7% of the combined total of women’s payouts between breakaway, barrel racing, pole bending and goat tying.

WCJR Youth breakaway competitor Kynder Florea is excited to be heading to the WCJR following National Junior Hight Finals Rodeo in Des Moines, Iowa.

“The opportunity to go after more money in the breakaway is fantastic,” Florea said. “It allows you to chase after your dreams—when you can win enough to money to make them happen.”

WCJR breakaway payouts vs. all Junior events

The breakaway payout made up a total of 17.2% of the total money paid out in individual events at the 2023 WCJR. That’s including all divisions, boys and girls for a total of 11 events. Breakaway paid out nearly $10K more than the next closest event—team roping.
