Apples to Apples: How do the 2024 Breakaway Circuit Races Compare to This Time Last Year?

A healthy circuit system is a good indicator of success of a rodeo event, and breakaway roping is putting an exclamation point on its statistics.

The 2024 WPRA’s Breakaway Circuit earnings are up across 85% of the 13 circuits when the top five athletes earnings are averaged compared to this time last year.

The Columbia River Circuit is packing a serious punch in 2024, with the top five earners averaging $6,529 compared to 2023’s $2,854—a 128% increase.

The Wilderness Circuit is another head-turning affair, with 2024’s competitors averaging $4,383 to 2023’s $1,835.

The WPRA’s circuit system is the grassroots of the organization, allowing young breakaway ropers to find their footing in rodeo and more experienced campaigners have some fun between a full-time job or ProRodeo competition.

Growth in the circuit system can be contributed to rodeos adding breakaway to the event lineup, and other rodeos adding equal money for breakaway ropers. A healthy circuit system is a good indicator of nationwide success of a rodeo event, and breakaway roping is putting an exclamation point on its statistics.

Special note: The numbers for 2023 were pulled in mid-June. The numbers for the 2024 breakaway circuits were pulled in late June.
