Addie Weil won the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, with a commanding 1.6-second time that yielded $5,828.

“It was the right situation at the right time,” Weil, 20, said. “I had a really good calf and my timing with that horse is great, so when we came across the line and that calf was right there—it made that throw really easy.”

Weil competed late in the Monday slack at the Odessa rodeo, which ran from Jan. 4–13, 2024. She had the opportunity to watch her calf go twice—once with Jill Tanner. Family friend Brad Olson gave her red baldy calf a hearty push and it was game on.

“Odessa’s one of those tricky setups where if you let your horse go before you get your rope up, you’re going to have to take a third swing,” Weil said. “I was thinking, ‘Drop my hand, let me horse go and get a swing, and on the second swing I’ll be ready to throw.'”

With the win, Weil is sitting atop both the WPRA World Standings and Texas Circuit Standings with $9,691 won at five rodeos. She’s slated to compete at RodeoHouston thanks to a win at the qualifier Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo in Rosenburg, Texas.

Weil’s horsepower

She’s done it all aboard 16-year-old sorrel gelding “Cutters Colt,” who was bred, raised and trained by her family.

“That horse means so much to me. He’s taken me to the Junior High, High School and College Finals,” Weil said.

Originally from Edna, Kansas, Weil is currently attending Texas A&M Commerce where she’s getting a degree in Animal Science on a pre-veterinary track.

“I have such a great support system behind me,” Weil said. “My college coaches and my dad have done so much for me. He trained my horses, he trained me and helps me with the mental side of it. It’s so nice to have that support and it’s not something I want to take for granted.”
