Madison Outhier is headed to the South Point Arena in Las Vegas to defend her 2020 WCRA Rodeo’s Women’s Rodeo World Championship Breakaway Roping title on Oct. 27-29, 2021.

Kaitlin Gustave: How are you feeling going into the Women’s Rodeo World Championship this year?

Madison Outhier: I feel really good. I came off of a hard summer, so honestly, this was one of my first huge things back since the summer. I was a little worried with how my mentality was and how my roping was coming home from the summer. The past couple of weeks have been really great. I’ve been getting to practice and feel like myself again in the roping pen. I feel really good about it now. I’m super excited.

KG: Will you be riding your sorrel gelding, Rooster?

MO: Yes. Taylor Hanchey and Cheyanne Guillory actually took him up there for me, so that was nice.

KG: How are you feeling about it being in Vegas this year?

MO: I’ve never roped in the South Point Arena, but I’m really excited about it. My dad has a lot of bucking horse futurities during Vegas every year that are in the South Point, so I’m a little familiar with their arena. I think it’s going to be super awesome to rope in. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m hoping it goes well.

KG: What have you been working on leading up to the WRWC?

MO: I think just practicing has helped me a lot. I didn’t get to practice a lot on the road this summer, so just getting to do that. I’ve been getting really efficient practicing, and we’ve gone to a bunch of good ropings the past couple of weekends.

KG: How are you feeling about the progressive round?

MO: I think it’s really cool that we get to rope our way through it. I was in the same position I was in last year going into it. I didn’t really have any benefits of like the top four, or anything to bypass the qualification round. I’m going to get to do the same thing again this year and rope through all of the rounds. I really like how the format is. You have to rope your way to get through the qualifying rounds, progressive rounds, all of that. You have to rope you’re way up all week and rope good all week.

Core Strength with Madison Outhier

KG: Do you feel any pressure to come back as the reigning champion?

MO: I don’t feel much pressure going back into it this year because I feel like it was so awesome to win last year and anybody could have been in that position. I was just thankful that I was, and I’m thankful that I get to rope in it again this year. It’s more of a hunger that I have to be back there in that position again, and I don’t really get pressured up much. I’m excited to have the opportunity to rope for that much money again.
