What Gives, Rodeohouston? Where’s The Breakaway?

After a seemingly sans-breakaway-roper start to the Super Series Semifinals at RodeoHouston, fans were rightfully confused. Here’s what’s happening.

Super Series Semifinal 1 kicked off at RodeoHouston on Wednesday, March 16, but fans noticed something odd: Although RodeoHouston made headlines by adding breakaway for the first time in 2022, the cowgirls were not present during the first performance of the semifinals.

Have no fear: Breakaway will be back on March 19. For its inaugural inclusion in the event, RodeoHouston simply made the decision to format the breakaway differently than the other seven events.

In the breakaway roping, as in the other seven events, contestants qualified into one of five Super Series brackets. That is where the paths split. In the breakaway, with its $133,500 total payout, ropers had the opportunity to run one calf in their Super Series. From there, the top two times advance to the March 17 Super Shootout round, during the evening rodeo performance. The Super Shootout round will then determine the top four breakaway ropers to advance to the Championship round on Saturday, March 19.

The other events at RodeoHouston, with total payout of $218,500, were allowed three chances to compete in each of their respective events, and the top four money earners overall advanced through to one of two Super Series Semifinals. From the Semifinals, the top four in each performance advance to Saturday’s Championship round, and others will have one final opportunity to qualify through a Wild Card round on Friday, March 16.
