Mr. Consistency Colton Charleston took the 12 & Under Breakaway Last Chance Championship with an aggregate of 7.32 ahead of a week full of Hooey Jr. Patriot roping competition.
Charleston won Round 1 with a 2.33, was second in Round 2 with a 2.51 and finished with a 2.48-second run in the short round aboard palomino gelding “Batman,” whom he’s ridden for nearly half of his life.
“To make [competition] easy, you have to trust your horse and put in a lot of practice,” Charleston, 12, said. “You and your horse have to get together.”
The long hours Batman and Charleston have put in together paid off in the “loud” Watt Arena. Charleston already had two semifinalist spots in the 12 & Under Breakaway, so he entered the jackpot for practice—and practice he did, gathering a total of $3,454.
Charleston is also entered in the 12 & Under Tiedown as well as heading in the #9.5, #8.5 and #7 team ropings. He said he hopes to leave Fort Worth with more than $15,000 in earnings.
