Everything in ProRodeo is a numbers game including Circuits, where full-time cowgirls and weekend ropers alike strive to advance to their respective circuit finals, make a little cash and hopefully qualify for the NFR Open.
But not all circuits are created equal. Geographical limitations, tough competition, sponsor-and-added-money availability and the inclusion of breakaway in circuit rodeos across the United States are all factors in how well breakaway ropers fare.
Not to mention the WPRA’s 40% 15 rule, which is a guide for how many rodeos breakaway ropers are required to attend in their circuit.
WPRA RULEBOOK SPOTLIGHT: THE 40% 15 RULE
8.8.2. Forty Percent (40%) 15 Rule
8.8.2.1. In order to satisfy the 40%/15 rule, a contestant must comply with the following:
1.) If the contestant’s principal place of residence is within her designated circuit, said contestant must compete in either 40% of the rodeos within that circuit (based on the total number of rodeos during the previous rodeo year which held the particular event for which the contestant seeks to become a CR contestant) or 15 rodeos with that event within the circuit, whichever is less or;
2.) If the contestant’s principal place of residence is not within her designated circuit, said contestant must compete in either 40% of the rodeos within the circuit (based on the total number of rodeos during the previous year which held the particular event for which the contestant seeks to become a CR contestant) or 15 rodeos with that event within the circuit, whichever is greater (provided that, if there are less that 15 rodeos with a particular event in a circuit during a rodeo year a nonresident must satisfy this rule if she competes in 100% of the rodeos with that particular event in the circuit during that rodeo year). At a director’s discretion it may go up to 60%.

The Prairie Circuit’s success can be credited, in part, to heavy hitters Taylor Munsell and Beau Peterson, both of which average more than $1,100 in winnings per rodeo. There are only a handful of other circuit ropers with that achievement, and no other circuit has two of them.
The Prairie Circuit also boasts events like the Woodward Elks Rodeo, which had $8,500 in added money and paid a total of $27,166 in 2023. Munsell took home the top prize of $5,433, giving her the edge over Peterson.
