Cheyanne McCartney swept the Corpus Christi Rodeo last weekend—taking Round 1 with a 1.9 for $4,478, then backing it up with a 2.0 to claim the finals and the $6,718 average—pushing her from No. 28 to No. 11 in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Standings with $30,924.61 won.
That’s the ProRodeo story. But it wasn’t her only, or even biggest, win of the week.
McCartney simultaneously banked $68,566 at the Gold Buckle Futurity Spring Showdown in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
She did it aboard four horses across two divisions: Thiccthirty, a 2022 Metallic Cattack gelding out of Smart Mate mare Nurse Connie; Dont Quote Me, “Muffin,” a 2022 Tagline mare out of BRC Popular Scotti; Icingonthedeal, a 2021 Dealinwithacoolcat stud owned by Treston Brazile out of San Jo Lena mare Shes Sanjos Playgirl; and Evereything, a 2020 Stevie Rey Von gelding out of Docs Stylish Oak mare Stylish Play Lena—competing in both the 4-&-Under and 6-&-Under Open Futurity divisions.
“My weekend started off very good,” McCartney said. “I had a fun two days at the Gold Buckle—rode some horses it was my first time showing and had some success on them, then rode some I know pretty good and had some success on them as well. They do an amazing job of making sure there’s a lot of ways to win money. I know a lot of people walked away with $10,000 that didn’t have to win first to get a good paycheck.”
After what she calls a slower winter on the ProRodeo side, McCartney has capitalized on the momentum built through the futurities—and Corpus was the payoff.
She leaned on her old faithful mare Aladdins Approach, “Lexus,” to get it done and credited her futurity success for helping build her up.
“I hadn’t really had the winter that I was wanting to have, so I was playing catch up a little bit and just trying to put checks together,” McCartney said. “I was really thankful to carry my momentum with me to Corpus. There’s a lot of rodeos left, a lot of money left to be won—so anytime you can capitalize and string some checks together, we try to take advantage of that.”
With a full summer still ahead, the Oklahoma cowgirl is inside a top 15 race that is tightening by the week. Hali Williams leads the pack at $79,276 through 10 rodeos, with Rylee George ($53,348) and Taylor Munsell ($50,829) holding steady at No. 2 and No. 3.
