Home Field Advantage: Taylor Munsell Clinches Sentimental Win at Woodward Elks Rodeo

Taylor Munsell used the funky box and prior knowledge to win her hometown rodeo June 10, 2023, cashing in $5,433.

Taylor Munsell had a lot of people in her corner during slack June 6, 2023, as she pulled off a 2.2-second time to win the Woodward Elks ProRodeo in Woodward, Oklahoma.

Dubbed her “hometown rodeo,” Munsell said she had nearly every member on both sides of her family in the stands. Plus, friends, sponsors and even her horse’s trainer were there to witness her win, worth $5,433.

“I grew up in that arena,” Munsell, 26, said. “We had junior high finals there, high school finals and even had a college rodeo in that arena one year. My family went and watched the ProRodeo every year growing up and my Papa Dick Munsell won Woodward Rodeo when he was a saddle bronc rider.”

The Woodward Elks Rodeo has had breakaway for three years, and Munsell said they’ve welcomed the ladies with open arms and host a breakaway jackpot the day before the rodeo with the same calves so the ropers can see them. The opportunity to look at the setup in Woodward is good, too, because Munsell says it’s a tricky one.

Tricky setup in Woodward

“The box is narrow, and the arena is wide open,” Munsell said. “It gives the calves a lot of room to run and it’s an intimidating arena for someone who hasn’t been there before. It works for me because I’ve been there so many times. It makes it easy.”

With her resident knowledge, Munsell knows what she needs come game time.

“They had big strong calves, and we were roping them way out in front of [us]. The scoring is super important there—the narrow box makes horses claustrophobic, so you’ve really got to break to the pin and get everything out of the box and barrier that you can.”

To nab her 2.2-second time, Munsell waited for her black baldy calf to make “a good honest move” before she broke to the pin. When the calf stepped right, Munsell’s horse, “Colonel,” read the situation and allowed her to make the catch with barely enough rope.

Colonel’s got it covered

Colonel also has deep ties with Woodward. The 11-year-old gelding registered as Hotrod Song (Show Me A Song Joe x Hotrod Hillary x Colonel Hotrodder) has been part of Munsell’s string for two years. Ironically, she paid for him at the Woodward Elks Rodeo in 2021.

He was bred by the Pitzer Ranch and trained by Cudd Quarter Horses before being sold as a 2-year-old in their annual Woodward sale that takes place during the rodeo.

Tommy Johnson purchased him out of the sale and used him as a heel horse for years before sending him to Munsell to train as a breakaway horse and sell. But when Munsell got her hands on him, he wasn’t leaving.

“He’s a freak of nature,” Munsell said. “He’s one of the strongest, most athletic horses I’ve ever ridden. He reads cattle well and he’s got a crawl to him. He can rate on his butt, but still maintain forward motion.”

Munsell’s beloved “Monster” is still in the picture, too, but she’s keeping him closer to home for the circuit rodeos.

Next on the roster for Munsell are a few “smaller” rodeos before gearing up to go to Colorado’s Greeley Stampede at the end of June.
