The Puyallup breakaway battle is heating up, with nearly the entire Top 25 competing, meaning the battle for NFBR berths is heating up—and bubble riders have everything to gain.

With 22 of the WPRA’s Top 25 breakaway ropers entered at Puyallup, the Washington State Fair Rodeo could shake up the Top 15 standings and decide who punches their ticket to the NFBR.

Projected Puyallup Breakaway Qualifiers
The top 23 breakaway ropers in the Playoff Series Standings advance to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, with one roper qualifying from the NFR Open.
No. 1 and No. 2 NFR Open ropers Shelby Boisjoli-Meged and Cheyanne McCartney inside the Playoff Series Standings, The Breakaway Roping Journal anticipates No. 3 finisher Zoie Bedke as the NFR Open representative.

It was a close call between Joey Williams and Jordi Edens-Mitchell for the No. 23 position in the Playoff Series Standings. Mitchell tied for No. 1 at the Moses Lake Roundup in Washington (lowest point tier) for 70 points, while Williams finished No. 2 at the Caldwell Night Rodeo in Idaho (middle point tier) for 97.5 points, overcoming the 26.6 point distance between her and Mitchell to unofficially punch her ticket to Puyallup.
As of August 15, Rookie Haiden Thompson, Braylee Shepherd, TiAda Gray and Martha Angelone are anywhere from $16K–$18.5K off of No. 15 Macy Young’s $75,986.
2024 Puyallup Champion Maddy Deerman came away with more than $16K at the event, which would boost any one of the ropers in the low 20’s into bubble territory.
Kendal Pierson at No. 27 is in a similar position, but with approximately $48,903 won, she has more legwork to do than her peers closer to No. 20.
And out of the top 25 breakaway ropers, 22 are roping at Puyallup, meaning anyone has an opportunity to secure an NFBR qualification or push themselves up the leaderboard as the ProRodeo season enters its final stretch.
