With Reno Rodeo Win, Martha Angelone Marches to No. 2 in World Standings

A short round and aggregate win in Reno moves Martha Angelone within striking distance of No. 1 in the world standings.

Martha Angelone has gone to the pay window on an impressive five horses in 2022, and she just added the Reno Rodeo to her win sheet in on her newest mount. In Reno’s second year hosting a breakaway roping event, Angelone’s aggregate time of 8.2 seconds on three head earned her $3,189, and she picked up checks in the second and short rounds to bring her earnings to $6,080 for the event.

Angelone’s weapon of choice for the Reno setup was a 12-year-old gelding named Spots Lil Legend. “Legend,” is owned by Tanner Green, something he shares in common with “Jesse,” the gelding on whom Angelone won nearly $70,000 at the Women’s Rodeo World Championship in May of 2022.

“He’s probably the fastest horse I’ve ridden,” Angelone said of Legend. “You’re never going to get outran on him—it’s pretty cool. Like, in the short round at Reno, I had a calf they hadn’t been quicker than 2.9 on, but Legend got me there and made it easy for me to be 2.7.”

Reno Rodeo Win Helps Martha Angelone March To No. 2 In World Standings
“Legend,” is the 12-year-old gelding Angelone rode to victory at Reno Rodeo.

With her win in Reno, Angelone now sits No. 2 in the WPRA world standings. Her $47,206.73 is narrowing the gap between her and world standings leader Erin Johnson, who has $50,249.66 in earnings.

For now, Angelone is looking ahead to the Cowboy Christmas run. She’s got four different horses in various locations—Legend and Jesse on the trailer; Simba, her NFBR-qualifying mount at Gilbert’s home; and her main jackpot stick, Chick.

Her win in Reno was the perfect boost of confidence before the exciting week.

Martha Angelone sealed her win at Reno with this winning 2.7-second run in the short round.

“I’m pumped,” Angelone said. “The next week can change a lot of stuff. I’m excited for the next month, honestly. Cowboy Christmas, the NFR Open, Salt Lake (WCRA)—there’s a lot of cool stuff coming up. Last year, I struggled during this time, and I want to turn it around this year. I feel a whole lot better going into it.”

Angelone is traveling for the summer with 2021 World Champion Sawyer Gilbert, and it has already been an adventure for the two ladies.

“We lost a bearing cap on the trailer and Sawyer decided to make one with a Bang (energy drink) can and plastic wrap. She just taped it on there,” Angelone said, laughing. “Oh, and she hit a trash can. Other than that, things are going pretty smooth out here.”
