The Ruby Buckle, Pink Buckle and Young Guns League announced the addition of a new, $50,000-guaranteed breakaway in South Jordan, Utah, running alongside the $1 million-plus Ruby Buckle Western Regional barrel race June 24-28.
The event—Open to all horses of all ages—is a timed-only event with an Open, Futurity and Pink and Ruby sidepot to maximize entries and showcase the best breakaway horses.
“This format seems like a good fit,” said Cheyanne McCartney, the 2023 NFBR Average Champ who’s building a futurity rope horse program herself. “There will be a lot of girls in that area at that time, right with the Old West Futurity happening.”

The Pink and Ruby Buckle Breakaway will offer three different divisions:
6-&-Under Breakaway: Open to Pink Buckle, Ruby Buckle, and Young Guns horses only, with a guaranteed $25,000 payout. The format includes two go-rounds and a short go.
$10,000 added Open breakaway sponsored by HayChix: Open to all horses and ropers of all ages. The entry fee is $750 with an 80% payback. The event consists of two go-rounds and a tiered short-go payout structure, where all ropers who catch in both rounds will advance. The top half of short-go qualifiers will compete in Tier 1, while the remaining half will be in Tier 2.

$25,000-Guaranteed Open Side Pot: Exclusively available to Pink Buckle, Ruby Buckle, and Young Guns horses at no additional charge, this side pot will run alongside the Open Breakaway.

Pink and Ruby Buckle’s staff emphasized that the event is a direct response to the increasing demand for breakaway roping opportunities within the stallion incentive programs, acknowledging the explosive growth of breakaway roping at all levels of competition.
“We have listened to your feedback, conducted extensive research, and are committed to delivering the best breakaway event possible,” Kayla Jones, Pink and Ruby Buckle marketing director, said. “Our goal is to build a successful breakaway program that supports ropers and incentivizes top-quality horses.”
Ropers and owners can expect a professionally run event aimed at growing the sport of breakaway roping while rewarding excellence in horse breeding and training.
