The GOAT?
Sadie Patterson Rises to the Challenge in Hooey Jr. Patriot 19-and-Under Goat Tying Semifinals

Sadie Patterson and "big boned" mare Princess are a strong force in the goat tying arena—both literally and figuratively

2025 marks the third year Sadie Patterson has advanced to the Hooey Jr. Patriot Short Go in the goat tying, and the 19-and-Under competitor from Hockley, Texas, is ready to make her mark.

“I thrive under the pressure,” Patterson, 16, said. “The louder the music is, the better I do. I just have to keep my mind in check and stay balanced between aggressive and calm.”

Riding 14-year-old mare “Princess,” Patterson won the 19-and-Under Goat Tying Semifinals with runs of 6.16 and 6.36 seconds—adding up to a speedy aggregate of 12.52 seconds. For the effort, Patterson earned $3,000.

“The big money and great goats keep me coming back to the Patriot,” Patterson said. “This is one of my favorite rodeos and I love to get to run at big money, make the finals and hopefully the $100,000 round.”

According to Patterson, her biggest strength as a tyer is her dismount. Her unwavering trust in Princess to hold steady down the pen coupled with workouts for quick feet and stretching means she can use the mare’s “big send” for more momentum.

“She’s a big girl,” Patterson said of Princess. “I think it’s to her advantage—she can accelerate way quicker than my other goat horse can, which is great in this pen. I’ve had her for a little over a year and she got me to the [15-and-Under] Finals last year. She’s really honest and a blessing to have.”

Ahead of the 19-and-Under short round on Sunday Sadie Patterson will be working on her flanking and groundwork. She says she’s looking forward to flying down the Will Rogers Coliseum and “Capitalizing the best I can.”
