A last-minute decision to enter the 2024 Platinum Medal rope horse futurity turned profitable for Sarah Angelone when she clinched both the Open and 6 & Under aggregate victories aboard her gelding, Reyl Chunky and banked $7,500 on Aug. 20, 2024.

Angelone and the 6-year-old gelding by The Reyl McCoy and out of Baba Boom by Peptoboonsmal known as “Squishy,” earned their first futurity win in grand fashion with a 916.36 on four runs, worth the $5,000 aggregate Open win and $2,500 6 and Under incentive win. She marked the performance with a wicked 232.39 in the short round from the third high callback position, besting Macie Rae Warken aboard FQH Chili Cat by .15 seconds thanks to the high score.

“I drew great calves all day on Squishy,” Angelone said. “But that (short round) calf was amazing. My horse was amazing. We were right on the barrier all day—I made myself nervous a couple of times— but when I score, Squishy’s just great at the line every time.”

Reyl Chunky pedigree

Angelone purchased Squishy as a 3-year-old from Michelle and Steve Anderson, the first prospect from their program she had the opportunity to purchase as her own investment, after taking a liking to their horses she’d had in for training.

Relying on training, competing on and selling great horseflesh for her income, Angelone made the decison to sell Squishy as a 4-year-old. A little ways down the road, however, the match proved not to be the perfect fit.

“They asked me to help me sell him,” Angelone said. “I said I would, of course. But I wanted to rope on him before I showed him to any buyers, and I ran one calf on him before calling to let them know I wanted to buy him back. He was still just as rank as the day he left my place.”
