We Need to Talk About Summer Williams

And how she won more than $15K across three different ProRodeos last weekend.

Reigning Resistol Rookie of the Year Summer Williams pulled off the best weekend of her ProRodeo career thus far with earnings of $15,381 at three rodeos, rocketing her from No. 19 in the WPRA World Standings to No. 7 with a total of $41,842 won.

She either won or tied for the win at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo in Vernal, Utah, Woodward Elks Rodeo in Oklahoma and the Parker County Frontier Days & PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Texas.

The next highest earner in breakaway roping over the weekend collected just over $6,886, highlighting Williams’ dominance across three different setups aboard her new mare, Queen, who’s registered as “Tommys Got A Shiner.”

Queen’s Pedigree.

“She is really small, but she is so athletic—super, super fast,” Williams said. “Probably the fastest horse I’ve ever ridden from the corner to the calf.”

Williams bought Queen through Cheyanne and Cody McCartney, and was previously owned by Shelby and Haven Meged. Though she just added Queen to her team in May, the duo has clicked quickly.

She also hauls her veteran gelding, Keeper, using both horses depending on the score length and setup. But Williams credits her mindset as much as her horsepower.

“I’ve really been focusing on my mental game and just honestly having fun and taking it one rodeo at a time,” the 19-year-old said. “I think we can all take for granted just being out here and getting to do what we get to do every day.”

Now traveling with breakaway roper Karrigan Cagley, Williams is committed to staying out West for the summer run, chasing the best 80 rodeos—and maybe even an NFBR qualification—while leaning on support from her boyfriend Gus Mosley and veteran competitors like McCartney and Hali Williams.
