Ellie Boyd became the first of many breakaway champions crowned at the 2025 Hooey Jr. Patriot in the 15 and Under Breakaway Jackpot, roping three head in 8.9 seconds for a total of $3,115 in winnings.
This is Boyd’s fourth year attending The Patriot, and the freshman says she loves the added money at the Fort Worth Event. She took her best shot at every dollar on Monday, March 10, too, roping in 2.74, 3.56 and 2.6 seconds.
Entering the short go as the seventh callback, the Waller, Texas cowgirl wasn’t sweating.
“My short round run, I was just thinking I needed to go out there and catch,” Boyd, 15, said. “I’m just jackpotting. I didn’t want to stress too much, just go make a run.”
With her two semifinal spots already secured in the Hooey Jr. Patriot 15 and Under, Boyd was using Monday’s roping as a chance to get familiar with the pen and round up a little extra cash.
“Today I rode my horse Teddy, who we call Ted-ward,” Boyd said. “He used to be my sister Kolbie’s horse, but she stopped roping about a year ago and I took him over. He really makes me work for it, but I ride him better than I do other horses, because I really have to drive him to that calf, and it makes me get up better and stronger.”
On the heels of her win, Boyd said she’s feeling confident headed into the rest of the week. Although she ties goats at the high school rodeos, she’s just focusing on breakaway this week, roping in the 19 and Under, too.
