The 15 breakaway ropers competing at the 2023 National Finals Breakaway Roping in Las Vegas Dec. 5-6 have been decided, with last-minute earnings coming from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to New Braunfels, Texas.

In an unprecedented year of earning, seven of the Top 15 have made more than $100,000. The cutoff for the Top 15 was $66,793, up from $48,138 in 2022—representing a 38% increase.

How did they do it?

Entering the Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls, 11 of the 12 ropers were safely inside the Top 15. (The one exception was Maddy Deerman, who did not made the rodeo count and was not a threat to other ropers’ NFBR qualifications).

This turned Sioux Falls into more of an NFBR preview and less like a fight to secure their qualification, unlike the team roping and barrel racing. Shelby Boisjoli pulled off the victory, winning $25,000 and setting a new season earnings record with $164,549. Martha Angelone earned $24,000 there to hold steady at No. 4 and Kelsie Domer earned $17,555, boosting herself from No. 7 to No. 5.

In the No. 15 spot, Erin Johnson successfully fended off Samantha Fulton, winning a total of $772 on the last weekend of the season at the American Hat Pro Rodeo in Bowie, Texas, and the Southern NM State Fair & Rodeo in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Fulton won the Comal County Fair & Rodeo in New Braunfels, Texas, for $1,470, and one of the rodeos at the Southern New Mexico State Fair in Las Cruces for $1,354, but it wasn’t enough to catch Johnson, who edged her out by $197.
