Arina Dee Haugen of Sturgis, South Dakota, dominated throughout the Hooey Jr. Patriot 15 & Under Breakaway Roping Last Chance Qualifier, winning both the first go-round and short round with times of 2.36 and 2.29 seconds, respectively.

Haugen rounded up $4,036 for the feat—and the high school freshman is just getting started.

“I’m entered in pretty much every event this week,” Haugen said. “Pole bending, barrels, goats and I’ll be back in the semifinals for this. My game plan this week is to stick to what I’ve been practicing and keep calm throughout it all.”

Haugen rode sister Landry’s gelding named “Scratchy,” known for his consistency and unflappable attitude. Together, they clinched victory from the high callback position with an aggregate of 7.59 seconds.

“It was a fast setup,” Haugen said. “I had to see ear to the end of the gate and then the calves ran.”

When asked why she enjoys breakaway compared to the other events, Haugen said she likes the fact she can do it throughout her rodeo career and the opportunities continue after college.
