Boisjoli, Williams or Angelone will be the 2023 NFBR World Champion

Spoiler alert: It's looking like only three ladies—Shelby Boisjoli, Hali Williams and Martha Angelone—have the earnings to take a run at the 2023 NFBR World Championship.

In the next 36 hours, breakaway roping’s 2023 world champion will be crowned, and the numbers suggest it’s likely going to be Shelby Boisjoli, Hali Williams or Martha Angelone—but it is possible for somone deeper in the field to do it, too.

Mathematically, if one breakaway athlete wins all 10 rounds and the average, the most money she can win at the 2023 NFBR is $64,667. With Shelby Boisjoli currently boasting $164,549 in earnings, technically No. 7 Taylor Munsell (with $108,458) and up are within striking distance.

But when you crunch the numbers, anyone outside the top three taking the 2023 Breakaway World Championship is unlikely.

2023 NFBR Payout

NFBR Round Payouts

With 10 full go rounds, each round will pay $5,080.08 to the winner. Second place will win $4,204.20$3,328.33 for third, $2,452.45 for fourth, $1,576.58 for fifth and $875.88 for sixth, according to the WPRA.

NFBR Average Payouts

The National Finals Breakaway Roping aggregate payout for the fastest times on 10 head is as follows:

  • 1st             $13,866.13
  • 2nd             $11,249.88
  • 3rd              $8,895.25
  • 4th              $6,540.63
  • 5th              $4,709.25
  • 6th              $3,401.13
  • 7th              $2,354.63
  • 8th              $1,308.13

What No. 1 Shelby Boisjoli has to do

Keep winning. Boisjoli has a $17,806 lead on Williams that can be maintained with go-round placings and an average check.

What No. 2 Hali Williams has to do

Make up the $17,806 gap on Boisjoli, which pencils to four go-round wins OR winning the average and one go-round. This is based on Boisjoli not winning another dime, which is highly unlikely. Williams will have her work cut out for her, but the NFBR first-timer is ready to win.

What No. 3 Martha Angelone has to do

Earn at least $31,683. It’s a tall order—requiring six go-round wins plus another go-round check OR win the average, three go-rounds and another go-round check from, at minimum, the fourth hole. But Angelone’s game day resolve is something we’ve seen before—at the 2022 NFBR she pulled out of a slump to come back and win go-rounds, eventually taking the World Championship.

Unlikely, but not impossible

Sarah Angelone’s on the outside looking in at No. 4 and needing to earn at least $50,264 to catch Boisjoli. To get it done, she’d need to win the average and a staggering eight go-rounds.
