Breakaway Bubble Battle: Labor Day Results Make for Tight Top 15 Margins

Kelsie Domer picked up checks at three rodeos worth a total of $16,848 while the battle to make the Top 15 continued in the Northwest, with margins growing ever tighter.

Kendal Pierson is one of the many ladies fighting for a spot inside the Top 15.

Labor Day weekend saw No. 8 roper Kelsie Domer steal the spotlight with more than $16,848 in winnings, while the ProRodeo breakaway bubble race grew even tighter—now just $2,434 separating No. 13 Erin Johnson from No. 16 Kendal Pierson.

With exactly 25 days until the close of the 2023 ProRodeo season and no rodeo count instated for breakaway ropers, it’s pedal-to-the-metal for ropers hoping to qualify for the NFBR.

The ladies in the top 20 have formed four bunches with similar earnings.

  • No. 1 and No. 2 Hali Williams and Shelby Boisjoli are duking it out with less than $2,000 between them. They’re in a league of their own, with the next bunch following by approximately $20,000.
  •  Nos. 3–5 contain both Angelone sisters and 2022 Reserve World Champions Taylor Munsell with approximately $10,000 between them. From here, the earnings fall off by about $15,000.
  • The Nos. 6–11 athletes are separated by about $12,000. This group contains Joey Williams, Dani Lowman, Kelsie Domer, Cheyanne Guillory, Jackie Crawford and Rickie Engesser. One may think this would be the “safe zone” but, with Puyallup, Washington, and the historic payouts set for Sioux Falls, South Dakota, nothing is guaranteed.
  • Nos. 11–20 are each separated by a few thousand dollars or less—with the overall spread between them coming in at just under $15,000. When reminded that Kelsie Domer just won $16,848 in one weekend, any movement is possible for athletes both inside and outside the Top 15.
