Macy Young and her powerful bay horse, Boomer, claimed one of the most coveted California in ProRodeo breakaway roping with a 14.1-second average on four head at the 2025 Clovis Rodeo.
Young turned in consistent runs of 3.5, 3.4, 2.6 and 4.6 seconds to outpace the field and secure the win, worth $5,975.
“Clovis just fun because it’s so different,” Young said.
The rodeo features California’s classic long score and big cattle that gave ropers a run for their money. Young saw her short round calf out a little farther than the rest to ensure she didn’t break the barrier—but the calf ended up having a little extra gas, too.
“I packed my rope down by my side and thought, ‘Oh no, we’ve got to go,’” Young said.
Boomer answered the call, closing the gap with his barrel horse speed to stop the clock at 4.6 and seal the average win.
“Boomer’s not a horse you really train on,” Young said. “You have to [practice] like you’re at a rodeo. My friend Jenna Craig asked me if I can see the calves on him, because he’s so big. And I can—for me, he actually points them out.”
Bird’s Eye View
Currently sitting around No. 15 in the WPRA World Standings with $26,810, (at the time of publishing, the standings had not been updated yet.) Young is satisfied with her position.
“I could have won a little more this winter, but I’m grateful for what I did get,” Young said.
When asked about her 2025 ProRodeo season goals, she was a little ambiguous.
“I’m a really bad goal setter,” Young said. “I kind of just go with the flow and what happens happens. We just kind of rodeo as a family unit, so we don’t like to get split up or be apart from each other. It is a goal to make the finals again, but if I don’t, it’s okay. Long as my family is healthy, that’s really my main goal. A healthy family that’s together.”
The win in Clovis was made sweeter because Young’s 90-year-old grandma Loretta was able to climb in the truck with them and experience the win herself. Loretta’s presence coupled with 3-year-old daughter Hadley cheering mommy on made it “one of my coolest wins.”
