Josie Conner’s “Dutch” was overwhelmingly voted 2024 Breakaway Horse of the Year—and with good reason.
From the moment the summer run started, Conner and Dutch began collecting ProRodeo checks, moving themselves into the No. 1 position in the Breakaway World Standings by late August.
“Dutch isn’t just fast; he’s smart and understands his job, which makes him such a reliable partner in the arena,” Conner said in the podcast.
While Shelby Meged and her mare “Onna” took over the lead on the last weekend of the ProRodeo season, (listen to the last episode!) Dutch’s masterful display of consistency at different setups across the U.S. meant he was voted into the elite club of breakaway horses.
“It’s like he knows exactly when to react and when to hold steady—it’s something you can’t really teach,” Conner explained on The Breakdown Podcast. “He’s always giving me his best, which is why he’s so deserving of Horse of the Year.”
